The first command to teach your puppy should be the Sit position. This position can easily be achieved by holding a motivator in your hand, either food or your puppy’s favorite toy.

Again, if you decide to use food as a motivator, then the best time to train your pup is when she eats. Measure out her normal portion of food and, in small amounts, feed her as a reward for the Sit command.

Here is how simple it works:

Hold a few pieces of food or the toy in the tips of your fingers and point the food or toy up. This should cock the puppy’s head up and back. In turn, her eyes and nose will look up to the ceiling as she plants her rear end down. Once she has successfully nailed her rear end to the floor, say “Sit.” You have created the first word in her vocabulary.

Praise her and reward her with some food as she remains sitting. If using a toy, toss it after she sits, so that the game of retrieving becomes the reward. Say “Fetch” as you toss the toy. By rewarding her immediately, you are making your puppy connect her action with the reward.
