This new leash minimizes the risk of spinal and neck injuries by reducing from pounds to ounces the impact of deliberate or accidental leash-jerks. Developed by the author and field-tested by experts and lay dog owners, it features a removable elastic member which creates a 4-inch valley in the leash.
The elastic action creates an ideal instrumental conditioning situation; the trainer merely stands still, holds the leash firmly against his or her hip and watches, as the dog learns by itself to ease up the gradually increasing tension. The only handler skill required is the ability to stand absolutely still. Further, when a standard jerk-release correction is applied, the elasticity absorbs the potentially injurious energy of the jerk.
Once 'not straining' is permanently learned, the Velcro-mounted elastic can be taken off the leash and replaced when needed for other dogs. The leash has been commended by leading trainers and behaviorists. The SofTouch conforms to AKC obedience equipment specifications.
