Dog shows give breeders a chance to compete and to exchange views and see dogs they might want to consider when trying to better their own line. If you have never been to a dog show, go! If you stay long enough, you will see the group competitions, where the best dog in each breed competes against other dogs from his own group.

There is a such things as ?conformation competition?, which is designed to evaluate purebred dogs on the basis of how closely they conform to their breed's standard of perfection.

Regular classes include:

1. Puppy (under one year old)

2. Novice (usually immature youngsters, but over a year old)

3. Bred by Exhibitor

4. American-Bred

5. Open (usually mature adults, often the most competitive class)

6. Best of Breed competition, which includes the winners male dog and winners female dog and those dogs that have already attained their championships.

The sexes are divided in the classes and championship points given depending on the number of entries in the breed and in the sex. If the dog completes a championship, he is considered to be more valuable to the owner in a breeding program.
